Santa Fe Workshops Offer Photography Mentorships

In addition to the 150 educational workshops offered each year by Santa Fe Photographic Workshops (santafeworkshops.com), the photographic resource center began offering individual mentorship programs in January.

After an initial orientation, students are paired with one of the 12 photography professionals affiliated with the studio, who include Nevada Wier, Arthur Meyerson, Sam Abell and Elizabeth Opalenik. The program focuses on each student's particular aspirations, whether it is to enhance technical skills, capture a personal style or generate career advancement, and includes assignments, critiques and mentor consultations...

Santa Fe Workshops Creates Scholarship

Santa Fe Workshops has established a scholarship fund in memory of Westlight stock agency co-founder Craig Aurness, who taught at the workshops in the early 1990s. The Craig Aurness Memorial Scholarship Fund, sponsored by Corbis, will provide two $1,250 scholarships annually to talented and deserving emerging professional photographers who wish to attend the weeklong workshops in Santa Fe. Bambi Cantrell Receives WPPI International Photographic Council Leadership Award

Reid Callanan, founder and director of the Santa Fe Workshops, is the PhotoMedia Photography Person of the Year for 1999. An engraved sculpture is given annually to a member of the photography industry who has earned recognition for "exceptional artistic and business accomplishments, passion, devotion to the industry, inspiration to colleagues, and humanitarian achievements in the community."

This is an issue I’ve been looking forward to since last summer. While on a nature photography road trip from Seattle to Grand Teton National Park, I stumbled on a photo gallery in Jackson Hole, Wyo. It was a Sunday night, so the gallery was closed, but I was transfixed by the photos displayed inside. I was heading back on the road early the next morning, so would not have a chance to enter the gallery, but I grabbed a courtesy catalog from a dispenser outside the door.

Continuing on my trip, the memory of those photos stayed with me. As I looked over the catalog along the way, I knew we had to share those photos—and this photographer—with our readers. One of the highlights of this issue on nature and wildlife photography has been getting to view more...
